Released in 2012, Zafeer Oud Vanille arrived during a phase when niche houses mixed gourmand sweetness with resinous oud. Alexandre.J presents this unisex scent as a dense vanilla-oud composition that opens on coconut, toffee and a dry leather edge before warming into tonka, ylang-ylang, cloves and white woods. The base brings vanilla and agarwood (oud) with a musk finish, so the dominant impression is sweet vanilla supported by woody, powdery and leathery facets. With 948 votes and a 3.93 average, it is broadly liked but often divides opinion over its dry leather turn and the balance between coconut and oud.
Our take
I appreciate the warm vanilla and the way toffee and tonka round the oud into something cozy and a little gourmand. About three quarters of voters mark it as like or love, and I agree it often lasts well and projects strongly on many people. On my skin the leather note can go dry or musty at times, and coconut is hit-or-miss, which makes the scent feel uneven. I reach for it in cold weather evenings, but I avoid it in heat when the sweetness can become cloying.
