Find Alfred Dunhill Icon

Alfred Dunhill Icon is the benchmark for this scent profile. Alternatives may be worth comparing, but they are independent products and we do not present them as equivalent to Alfred Dunhill's own fragrance.

About Alfred Dunhill Icon

The fragrance these clones are inspired by.

Icon by Alfred Dunhill (2015) is a men's fragrance by Carlos Benaïm that has become a popular, occasionally polarising release, rated 4.18/5 from 3,979 votes. The scent is primarily aromatic and fresh spicy, opening with bright neroli and bergamot lifted by black pepper and petitgrain. A spicy, aromatic heart of black pepper, lavender, cardamom, juniper berries and sage keeps the composition lively, while vetiver, oakmoss, iris, leather and oud provide a woody, earthy base with a faint floral dustiness. Many wearers highlight the clear neroli/bergamot top and peppery core, though opinions split over synthetic facets and batch variation.

Our take

I like Icon for its crisp neroli and bergamot top and the peppery heart gives it real personality. On good bottles I get moderate to long longevity and a medium projection that works well for daytime spring and summer wear. My main gripe is occasional batch-related sharpness that can read synthetic or medicinal, which turns some people off. Overall I find it a solid, slightly unusual citrus-aromatic option for men.

A Closer Look

The Bottle

Alfred Dunhill Icon has a bottle that refuses the usual rectangular silhouette: its tall cylindrical body is silver-coloured and densely crosshatched with diamond-shaped texture. A clear or reflective section divides the upper body near its top. The microphone-like outline makes it unusually memorable, rather than merely decorative.

Original or Clone

Icon is worth buying as the original when the bottle matters: its silver, microphone-like form is unusually distinctive, not anonymous designer packaging. Carlos Benaïm’s authorship gives the fragrance a clear creative source, while its aromatic, fresh spicy, citrus profile explains why it has attracted attention. Three interpretations from two houses are tracked, modest evidence of a recognised reference rather than a crowded field. On these grounds, we favour the original.
