About Amouage Fate Man

The fragrance these clones are inspired by.

Fate Man is a 2013 men’s fragrance from Amouage, created by Karine Vinchon Spehner. It is an amber-spicy composition defined by a bold cumin and saffron opening that leads into a resinous heart of incense, immortelle and labdanum, and a sweet, balsamic base of licorice, tonka and warm woods. The blend reads both savory and sweet, with fresh spicy and warm spicy accents over a woody-balsamic core. With a 3.9/5 average from 1,396 votes and a notable group of devoted fans, Fate Man is often described as polarizing: praised for its depth and uniqueness and rejected by those who find the curry-like spice too strong.

Our take

I find Fate Man striking but divisive. The cumin and saffron give a kitchen-like, savory spark that I appreciate, and the incense, labdanum drydown is rich and long-lasting. It projects strongly at first and then can sit closer to the skin depending on wearer and weather. What works is the personality and persistence; what doesn’t is how that same spice can read as food or even unpleasant to some noses. I advise sampling first and reserving this for colder months or evening wear.

A Closer Look

The Bottle

Fate Man gives Amouage’s rectangular bottle a shifting pink, blue, green and yellow sheen, making the familiar outline feel unusually flamboyant. The large gold-coloured fan cap and pointed central emblem add ceremony, while a small coloured detail near the cap supplies another jewel-like accent. The colour treatment is the main attraction, turning a straightforward body into something much more noticeable. It’s theatrical and distinctive rather than elegant, and the iridescent finish may demand more attention on a shelf than the darker bottles. This is confident perfume dressing with little interest in understatement.

Original or Clone

Karine Vinchon Spehner’s authorship gives Fate Man a reason to remain the reference: this is a composed work with a named creator, not merely a set of accords. The bottle adds a memorable object to that case, with its iridescent-looking presentation, flared cap and front emblem. Its amber, fresh-spicy character has attracted one tracked interpretation from one house, modest evidence of standing rather than a reason to dismiss the original. We favour the original here.
