About Amouage Opus XIV – Royal Tobacco

The fragrance these clones are inspired by.

Cécile Zarokian, a respected perfumer known for resinous, spice-forward work, created Opus XIV, Royal Tobacco for Amouage in 2022. Marketed for both women and men, the composition opens on a bright resin and spice accord with olibanum, anise and cardamom giving a sharp, aromatic start. The heart centers on tobacco layered with licorice, fenugreek and orange blossom, while the base settles into warm resins, bourbon vanilla, birch tar and oud. The scent reads ambered, sweet and balsamic with prominent spicy and aromatic facets. With a 4.21/5 average from 2,767 votes, it has a sizable fan base and a notably polarizing profile.

Our take

I love how Royal Tobacco pushes bold contrasts: anise and licorice at first, then a sweet, resinous tobacco that lasts all day. Projection and longevity are outstanding; this is winter-night territory for me. The fenugreek/licorice combo will feel too sweet or medicinal for some, yet that edge is exactly what keeps it interesting and different from standard tobacco fragrances.

A Closer Look

The Bottle

Opus XIV – Royal Tobacco follows Amouage’s later Library Collection style with a pale beige-pink rectangular body, dark broad flared cap and narrow gold-toned collar. The central crest and small front lettering give it a formal appearance, while the cap provides the theatrical shape. The soft body colour prevents the dark top from becoming too severe, although the crest makes the front slightly busier than necessary. It’s distinctive enough to feel like an Amouage original, even if the familiar silhouette itself isn’t revolutionary. The contrast is the strongest feature.

Original or Clone

Authorship gives this release a clear reason to stand apart: Cécile Zarokian is credited with composing it, a fact an interpretation cannot carry over. The fragrance’s Amber, Sweet and Balsamic profile also helps explain its standing; three houses have tried to reproduce that character. We therefore see the original as the more grounded purchase for readers who want the named composition, while an interpretation remains a reasonable route for readers unconcerned with that authorship.
