About Amouage Sunshine Woman

The fragrance these clones are inspired by.

Elise Benat, who contributed several notable releases for Amouage, signed Sunshine Woman (Amouage, 2014) for women. The perfume opens on a fruity almond- and black currant-leaning accord lifted by davana, then moves into a heart where osmanthus, magnolia, jasmine and vanilla create a warm white-floral center with a soft powdery almond quality. The base brings white tobacco, papyrus, patchouli and cade oil for a woody-smoky underpinning. Rated 4.05/5 from 6,271 votes, Sunshine Woman is widely liked but polarising on skin chemistry, with strong fan support alongside vocal detractors.

Our take

I like parts of this scent a lot but it frustrates me. The combo of apricot-like fruit, almond and osmanthus works beautifully on some skins and gives a warm, powdery sweetness with tobacco that feels grown-up and slightly smoky. On other skins it turns musty or rubbery and that kills it. Ratings and votes show many people love it, a large group find it pleasant, and a notable minority hate it. For me it is worth trying in person; when it sits right it is memorable, when it goes wrong it is unbearable.

A Closer Look

The Bottle

Sunshine Woman gives Amouage’s familiar bottle a bright, playful colour scheme. The near-square body is vivid yellow, while a white vertically ribbed dome cap creates a crisp contrast above it. A narrow gold-coloured collar adds a small flash between the two, and the pale central emblem keeps the front from becoming empty. The proportions feel cheerful rather than luxurious, which seems appropriate here. It’s a confident, characterful bottle with little interest in quiet elegance. The saturated yellow is what stays in the mind, more than the familiar rectangular shape.

Original or Clone

Elise Benat’s authorship gives Sunshine Woman a clear reason to buy as the original: this is a named composition, not merely a set of accords. Its fruity, floral and white-floral character has also drawn attempts from three houses, which confirms that the fragrance has a recognizable place in the market. The vanilla facet adds specificity to that profile, but the evidence does not tell us what any interpretation is like in practice. A reader may reasonably choose one; the original’s strongest case here is its credited perfumer.
