About Amouage The Library Collection Opus I

The fragrance these clones are inspired by.

Opus I (2010) by Amouage, composed by Daniel Maurel, opens on a sharp mix of cardamom, bitter orange and plum that yields to a dense white-floral heart of ylang-ylang, tuberose, jasmine, rose and lily-of-the-valley. The base layers incense, papyrus, guaiac wood, tonka, sandalwood, vetiver and Virginia cedar, creating a smoky, woody foundation that tames the florals' sweetness. The result reads as a spicy, woody white-floral with sweet and resinous facets; main accords are strongly woody, warm spicy and white floral. Reception is split: it commands a devoted following and strong performance ratings but also draws a noticeable minority who find it heavy or old-fashioned.

Our take

I like Opus I for moments when I want presence: the tuberose and ylang are bold, the cardamom-plum top is bracing, and the smoky-woody base gives it weight. The longevity and projection are real, this will hang around on skin and clothes for hours, so it works best in cold weather or at night. That power is also its drawback: it can be overwhelming in close quarters and will not suit someone who wants something subtle. Still, for a statement floral I find it rewarding rather than flimsy.

A Closer Look

The Bottle

Warm yellow-gold gives this squat, rounded bottle a ceremonial air without relying on elaborate decoration. Above the small Amouage plaque, a tall cylindrical cap is cut with strong vertical fluting. The black plinth, with visible Library Collection Opus I naming, provides the sharpest contrast and makes the bottle feel like one part of a coordinated series. I find the body fairly ordinary, but the colour and dark base save it from anonymity. The plinth matters here, completing a presentation that would otherwise seem unfinished.

Original or Clone

Daniel Maurel's name gives The Library Collection Opus I a clear point of authorship that an interpretation cannot share. That matters here because the fragrance has attracted four interpretations from three houses: its woody, warm-spicy and white-floral profile has become a defined target rather than an obscure curiosity. We therefore favour the original when the perfumer's work is part of the purchase; choosing an interpretation remains a reasonable route for a reader who places less weight on that authorship.
