About Amouage The Library Collection Opus IX

The fragrance these clones are inspired by.

Polarising on release and since 2015, Amouage The Library Collection Opus IX is a unisex composition by Nathalie Lorson and Pierre Negrin that has split opinion while holding a near-four-star average from 739 votes. The perfume opens with a bright, indolic white-floral burst of jasmine and camellia tempered by black pepper, then moves into a rich heart of beeswax, leather and guaiac wood. A dense base of civet, ambergris and vetiver gives it a pronounced animalic and amber-musk character, with powdery and woody undertones. Wearers describe it as structured and theatrical; some praise its uniqueness, others find the opening abrasive on a strip but more rounded on skin.

Our take

I respect Opus IX for its ambition and raw character. The jasmine-and-civet axis is rare and it smells like serious, old-school perfumery rather than a safe modern release. Community votes match my experience: many love it outright while a sizable minority dislike it, and performance is indeed heavy, long-lasting with strong sillage on clothes. What I like is the way beeswax and leather anchor the florals; what I don’t like is the initial sharpness on a blotter and the animal note that will annoy sensitive noses. It’s brilliant if you want bold, but not subtle.

A Closer Look

The Bottle

Opus IX is the bolder member of this Library Collection group, with a deep red rounded body set into a gold-toned base. The tall striped cylindrical cap repeats the warm palette and gives the simple shape its theatrical detail, while the small Amouage label keeps the front from becoming crowded. Red and gold make the presentation unapologetically grand, with a slightly retro mood that suits the series. It isn’t subtle, but that’s the point. The original has much more shelf presence than a generic rectangular perfume bottle would manage.

Original or Clone

The case for buying the original is strong because four interpretations from three houses have tried to reproduce its animalic, white-floral and amber character. That attention gives Opus IX genuine reference status, even without comparative scores to tell us how any interpretation resembles it. Nathalie Lorson and Pierre Negrin are credited as its perfumers, adding a specific act of authorship that an interpretation cannot carry. Choosing an interpretation remains reasonable, but the evidence gives the original the clearer claim.
