About Amouage The Library Collection Opus VII

The fragrance these clones are inspired by.

Alberto Morillas and Pierre Negrin teamed up on Opus VII for Amouage in 2013. Morillas is known for clean, versatile constructions and Negrin for rich resins and oriental depth; their collaboration yields a dense, spicy-woody leather fragrance for women and men. Opus VII opens green-spicy with galbanum, cardamom and pink pepper, moves into a warm, food-like heart shaped by fenugreek, cumin-like accents, oud and leather, and settles on an ambered, woody base of patchouli, sandalwood, amber and musk. The scent scores 4.16/5 from 977 voters and is often praised for depth while provoking strong reactions from some wearers.

Our take

I admire both perfumers and I like bold resinous scents, but Opus VII is a love-it-or-hate-it for me: the first phase reads sharply spicy and almost edible on my skin, then it calms into a smoky, leathery oud with dry amber that I enjoy; performance is intense, a few sprays last through the night, so I reserve it for cold evenings when I want something serious and unmistakable.

A Closer Look

The Bottle

Unlike the softer rectangular Opus bottles, this one has a flattened, hip-flask-like profile that immediately sets it apart. Its mottled dark brown surface feels subdued and faintly antique, then the bright gold-toned cylindrical cap cuts through with a flash of polish. A black plinth carrying the Library Collection name maintains the family connection and sharpens the outline. The muted finish is more interesting than extra ornament would be. It’s moody and unusually specific, though the contrast at the top may be too abrupt for some tastes.

Original or Clone

The original has a real claim to attention: three houses have attempted to reproduce this fresh-spicy, woody, warm-spicy fragrance, making its standing clearer than a bare product listing would. Alberto Morillas and Pierre Negrin are credited with its composition, a piece of authorship no interpretation can carry over. We have no resemblance evidence, so this does not establish that every interpretation falls short; it does support buying the original when the composed release, rather than an approximation, is the point.
