About Amouage The Library Collection Opus VIII

The fragrance these clones are inspired by.

The Library Collection Opus VIII (Amouage, 2014) is built from a top of jasmine, orange blossom and ylang-ylang, a heart of olibanum, guaiac wood, saffron, ginger and vetiver, and a base of West Indian bay and benzoin. Created by Pierre Negrin and Richard Herpin for women and men, this composition yields a potent white floral that sits on a resinous amber and woody scaffold, with warm spice and a faint incense thread in the dry down. Main accords register as white floral, amber and woody with fresh and warm spicy facets. With a 3.95/5 rating from 725 votes, reactions are split: many love it while a notable minority dislike it.

Our take

I find Opus VIII both striking and uneven. The jasmine and orange blossom read clear and intense, while saffron and olibanum push the heart toward resinous spice and smoke; that gives it the long life and heavy projection most voters report. Yet the opening can be sharp and almost metallic on some skins, and that keeps it from being approachable. I respect the ingredient quality and the bold character, but it is not for someone who wants a soft or subtle white floral, it will either thrill you or repel you.

A Closer Look

The Bottle

A squat cream body with rounded shoulders gives this Library Collection bottle a calm starting point. The tall cylindrical cap is much livelier, using vertical gold and dark stripes that bring an old-fashioned, faintly archival mood. A small Amouage plaque sits above the gold base, where Library Collection naming remains visible. The body alone isn’t especially distinctive, but the carefully matched cream, gold and dark tones make the full presentation feel quietly theatrical. It’s formal without becoming severe, and the striped cap is plainly the part worth remembering.

Original or Clone

Pierre Negrin and Richard Herpin give The Library Collection Opus VIII a clear authored identity that an interpretation cannot carry over. The squat rounded bottle and striped cylindrical cap add a distinctive object to that case. Its white-floral, amber and woody character is the kind of specific brief that makes the original worth taking seriously, but we have no comparative evidence about the interpretations. On the evidence available, the original is the more defensible purchase for readers who care about authorship and the object itself.
