Created in 1995 by Creations Aromatiques for Amouage, Ubar is a women's oriental floral that pairs an intense white-floral heart with a deep amber-wood base. The composition opens on bright hesperides like tangerine, orange and litsea cubeba with a green violet-leaf edge, then moves into jasmine, tuberose, ylang-ylang and orange blossom that often read powdery and animalic. The drydown rests on black amber, sandalwood, copahu balm, patchouli, vanilla and vetiver, which give pronounced warmth and length. Widely admired by collectors, it holds a 4.11/5 average from 2,454 votes and is seen as rich and bold, though a sizable minority finds it heavy.
Our take
I consider Ubar one of those perfumes that demands patience and a strong nose: the white florals and animalic saffron-like facets reward time on skin, and the base carries on for hours. The projection and longevity are real, this is not a quiet scent, so I wear it for evenings or colder months. It can feel cloying in heat and it will divide people at close range, but for someone who wants a dense, vintage-style floral-oriental, it hits the mark in ways most modern releases do not.
