About Aramis Aramis Devin

The fragrance these clones are inspired by.

The composition of Devin opens with bright citrus and green facets: galbanum and aldehydes sit with bergamot, lemon, orange, lavender and artemisia to form a sharp, aromatic top. The heart moves into resinous pine needles while carnation, cinnamon, jasmine and caraway add warm spice. Its base settles on leather, oakmoss, labdanum, patchouli, musk, amber and cedar, yielding a green, woody leather core with amber depth. Launched by Aramis in 1977 and created by Bernard Chant for men, Devin is generally regarded as a classic aromatic-woody fragrance; a 4.11/5 average from 962 votes shows many wearers value its vintage character.

Our take

I enjoy Devin for its green, piney leather core and the old-school woody-mossy feel; the spice heart gives it personality without feeling loud. On my clothes it lasts and projects well, though on skin the strength varies and some people will find it thin. I prefer it in cooler weather and use light sprays to avoid an overly dry leathery edge. Availability and mixed reports on projection are drawbacks, but when it works for me the scent feels characterful and good value.

A Closer Look

The Bottle

Aramis Devin’s bottle is a conventional object, built around a squat rectangular shape with rounded shoulders and lower corners. Amber-gold liquid gives the clear-looking form some warmth, while the dark green label and silver cylindrical cap add restrained contrast. It is tidy and recognizable, but hardly a memorable piece of packaging.

Original or Clone

Bernard Chant’s authorship gives Aramis Devin a clear reason to buy the original: this is a named composition, not merely a list of aromatic, woody and green effects. Its standing is also tangible in the market; one house has tried to reproduce this character. That effort confirms the fragrance has a distinct place, though it tells us nothing about resemblance. We therefore favour the original on authorship, while an interpretation remains a reasonable choice for readers who want to explore the idea.
