Find Aramis Aramis

Aramis Aramis is the benchmark for this scent profile. Alternatives may be worth comparing, but they are independent products and we do not present them as equivalent to Aramis's own fragrance.

About Aramis Aramis

The fragrance these clones are inspired by.

Aramis (1966) by Aramis, created by Bernard Chant, is an aromatic woody-leather fragrance for men that pairs sharp herbal top notes and aldehydes with a dense mossy-amber base. It opens with a green, slightly bitter lift, bergamot, artemisia and thyme threaded with aldehydes and myrrh, moves through a spicy, earthy heart of sage, cardamom, jasmine and patchouli, and dries down to leather, oakmoss, vetiver, sandalwood, amber and musk with a touch of coconut. Known as a 1960s masculine classic, it is highly recognizable, rated 3.99/5 from 4,274 votes, and divides opinion (41% love, 17% dislike or hate).

Our take

I like Aramis for its bold, herbal-woody leather character and solid staying power; it feels mature and strong, great for cold weather or evening wear, but it can be heavy and polarizing for those who prefer modern light scents.

A Closer Look

The Bottle

Aramis has a tall, broad rectangular bottle with rounded, bevelled edges and a flat front face, filled with visible amber-gold liquid. The smooth gold-coloured cylindrical cap gains definition from horizontal ridges at its base, while a dark brown, clipped-corner plaque carries the name in large serif lettering. It is a handsome, somewhat distinctive object, though its overall shape remains conventional.

Original or Clone

Bernard Chant is the clearest reason to buy Aramis rather than an interpretation: his authorship gives this aromatic, woody, earthy fragrance a specific creative origin that a matching note list cannot convey. The accords, including leather, describe a character distinctive enough to attract imitation rather than a vague generic style. Three interpretations from two houses are tracked, placing Aramis firmly in the territory of a reference worth attempting. On the evidence available, authorship makes the original the more meaningful choice.
