Aube Rubis was released by Atelier des Ors in 2015, a period when niche houses often mixed dense woods, bold patchouli and gourmand touches with ornate bottle design and synthetic accents. Created by perfumer Marie Salamagne, this unisex scent leans woody and earthy, opening on black currant, grapefruit and bergamot before moving into an iris, sage and violet heart and settling on patchouli, Haitian vetiver and praline. The main character is patchouli-driven with aromatic and woody accords and a sweet, fruity counterpoint. Our take
I like the deep, chocolatey patchouli and the vetiver backbone, but the opening reads too sharp and slightly synthetic for my taste. The sillage is impressively strong and the trail can last well, which suits evening wear, yet the powdery, medicinal edge pulls the scent out of balance for me. I understand why it has passionate fans, but it never quite becomes comfortable on my skin.

Aube Rubis has a squat, broad rounded-rectangular bottle whose clear-looking surface frames bright yellow-gold-looking liquid and suspended flakes. Thin dark-gold-looking lines radiate from behind the black label, while a large black rounded cap sits above a narrow gold-colored-looking collar. It is a genuinely distinctive object, even though its basic perfume-bottle format is familiar.
Original or Clone
Marie Salamagne is the clearest reason to buy Aube Rubis as the original: the composition has a named author, not merely a label attached to a woody, earthy, patchouli-led fragrance. The bottle strengthens that case, since its suspended flakes and sunburst lines give the release a memorable object to own. Two houses have attempted to reproduce it, which confirms that this particular character has drawn attention, though the available evidence does not establish how close either interpretation comes.
