Decibel is a polarising men's fragrance from Azzaro released in 2011 and created by Christophe Raynaud. It is a sweet, balsamic amber scent centered on vanilla and tonka, with a smoky incense heart and a licorice-accented opening brightened by Amalfi lemon and aldehydes. Violet and vetiver add a subtle green, slightly dry edge in the mid and base. Ratings and vote totals reflect a split reception, with a strong group of fans and a sizable number of detractors, which mirrors how its bold smoky and sweet accords are perceived. Our take
I like Decibel for its bold smoky-vanilla character but I understand why others reject it. The licorice-led opening and aldehydes can feel sharp or medicinal on some skins, while the drydown of tonka, vanilla and incense becomes warm and resinous. Projection is strong at first then it settles; longevity is hit or miss for me. I use it for cold evenings and would tell anyone to test before buying.

The Bottle
Azzaro Decibel’s bottle is a tall, near-black form with a narrow cylindrical-to-slightly tapered body and rounded shoulders. A broad silver-grey collar carries a visible “dB” mark, while the top is a silver-grey perforated dome with a small dark oval at its centre. It is an unusually distinctive object, and far more memorable than a conventional fragrance bottle.
Original or Clone
The bottle gives Decibel a clear advantage over an interpretation: its tall dark body, marked collar and perforated dome are unusually distinctive. Christophe Raynaud’s authorship adds a second reason to stay with the original, since that credit belongs to this release. The market evidence is small—one house has attempted this amber, vanilla and balsamic fragrance—so we would not turn that into a claim of superiority, but the original has the stronger case here.
