Velvet Tonka (BDK Parfums, 2021) by perfumer Alexandra Carlin is a unisex gourmand built around almond, tonka and bourbon vanilla. The composition opens on bitter-sweet almond with a bright thread of orange blossom, moves into a heart of tobacco and rose oil that brings warmth and a faint floral edge, and dries down on tonka bean, bourbon vanilla, amberwood and amyris. The overall effect is a sweet, nutty vanilla core with amber and woody support: almond and vanilla dominate while tobacco adds weight. Reception is mixed, about 36% of voters mark it as a favorite while roughly 20% dislike or hate it.
Our take
I enjoy the creamy tonka and bourbon vanilla here; the almond gives a marzipan character that works well in fall and winter evenings. What bothers me is the opening can feel thin and slightly chemical on some skin, and the projection and longevity are uneven, sometimes it fades faster than I expect. It’s a cozy, sweet scent when it behaves, but it won’t please those who dislike strong almond or any synthetic top notes.

The white, gold-bordered label sits low and to the right, an off-centre detail that gives this otherwise familiar format a more distinctive, considered appearance.

Alexandra Carlin's authorship gives Velvet Tonka a strong reason to buy the original: she composed this vanilla-sweet-almond fragrance, giving it a named creative source. Four interpretations from two houses show that its character has earned enough recognition to be deliberately reproduced.
