About Boadicea the Victorious Blue Sapphire

The fragrance these clones are inspired by.

Released in 2013, Blue Sapphire by Boadicea the Victorious arrived during a period when niche brands emphasized resinous ouds and warm spices. Created by Christian Provenzano and offered for women and men, it opens with bright lemon and saffron-tinged chamomile alongside herbaceous sage and marigold, moves into a floral heart of rose, Indian jasmine and magnolia, and dries down to agarwood (oud), patchouli and amber. The scent reads aromatic and herbal with clear oud and floral accents and citrus lift. Rated 4.19/5 from 944 votes, it has a sizable fan base while also drawing debate about its originality and price.

Our take

I bought this after seeing the scores and I can see why people like it: the oud and rose are rich, saffron and herbs keep it from going sweet, and the longevity is impressive; on the downside it can smell very close to cheaper options, so I tend to pull it out for colder nights or special outings.

A Closer Look

The Bottle

Blue Sapphire makes the house shape feel jewel-like through its deep cobalt body and huge gold-looking medallion. The small blue centre is a useful detail, breaking up the large expanse of ornament, while the tiered cap repeats the sculptural mood above it. There’s no label to interrupt the composition, so the colour and knotwork have complete control of the front. It’s flamboyant and highly recognisable, though subtlety isn’t part of the brief here. As a display bottle, it has confidence, even if the decoration does most of the talking.

Original or Clone

Blue Sapphire makes a stronger case for the original through its bottle: the cobalt disc, oversized patterned ornament and sculptural cap make the release unusually memorable as an object. Its aromatic, herbal and oud profile gives the fragrance a clear character beyond a generic label. Six interpretations from four houses show that this character has attracted serious reproduction, so the original is the more compelling choice for readers who value its distinctive presentation and established standing.
