About Boadicea the Victorious Chelsea

The fragrance these clones are inspired by.

Released in 2013 during a phase when niche houses were bringing dense oud blends to wider attention, Chelsea by Boadicea the Victorious is a unisex woody-oud creation by Christian Provenzano. The composition opens with bergamot and a tart raspberry edge over vetiver, then moves into a heart of agarwood (oud), cypriol and cedar, while vetiver, mahogany, patchouli and amber anchor the base. The result reads as a dry, earthy, woody scent with warm spice hints and a pronounced oud presence. Reception is mixed: it holds a loyal following and averages a 3.91/5, but many find its smoky, raw facets challenging.

Our take

I respect Chelsea for its full-throttle oud and vetiver profile and for lasting power, but it can feel harsh. On my skin the scent is a bold, smoky-woody statement that projects far and hangs on for hours, which fans will love. At the same time I notice a gluey, rubbery edge and some synthetic dry-wood facets that make it uneven; it grows on me at times, yet other wears feel abrasive. Try a sample before committing.

A Closer Look

The Bottle

Chelsea softens Boadicea’s ornate formula with a pale near-circular body and cream-gold-looking details. The large interlaced medallion remains central, but the light palette makes it feel gentler and less jewel-like than the darker versions. A short neck, rounded cap and rectangular foot preserve the familiar proportions. It’s elegant in an almost bridal way, although the pale colours lose some of the impact that makes these bottles so recognisable. If you prefer a quieter interpretation of the house style, Chelsea is an easy choice.

Original or Clone

Chelsea earns a case for the original through its unusually distinctive bottle and its credited authorship. The broad, flattened body and interlaced central decoration give it a presence that would be lost if the object were treated as an afterthought. Christian Provenzano is credited as perfumer, tying this woody, aromatic, oud-led composition to a named creator. Four interpretations from three houses show its standing, but a reader choosing one is making a reasonable choice when provenance is less important to them.
