About Boadicea the Victorious Regal

The fragrance these clones are inspired by.

Regal is a 2010 unisex release from Boadicea the Victorious, created by Christian Provenzano. The composition opens on saffron, geranium and green notes, moves into a floral heart of rose, violet, hedione and jasmine, and dries down to patchouli, Virginia cedar, sandalwood, amber and musk. That saffron-plus-green entry gives a spicy-fresh spark that quickly yields to a dominant rose shaded by warm spicy and woody accords; patchouli and amber provide earth and resinous warmth while musk and woods round the base. Marketed for women and men, Regal reads as a warm spicy rose with strong woody and powdery facets, and listener response is mixed with a steady core of fans and a visible group of detractors.

Our take

I like the concept, saffron and a big rose over patchouli, but on my skin Regal often feels airy and faint; the first hour shows spice and rose, then it softens and loses projection. Works better for cool nights; try before you buy.

A Closer Look

The Bottle

Regal brightens the house’s circular format with amber liquid, a reflective pale body and a light knotwork medallion. The interlaced centre is the main attraction, while the short layered silver-coloured cap neatly repeats the bottle’s rounded forms. A small foot keeps the body from looking like a flat disc. It’s decorative, polished and a little showy, with a ceremonial mood that suits the name. The presentation won’t appeal to minimalists, but it has more personality than an ordinary spray bottle and makes its ornate intentions clear.

Original or Clone

Regal has a stronger case than an interpretation for readers who care about the complete original design. Its broad, flattened circular bottle and oversized knot-like central panel give it an object identity that a scent brief alone cannot supply. Christian Provenzano is the credited perfumer, adding clear authorship to that appeal. Four interpretations from three houses confirm that this is a release others have considered worth reproducing, though no resemblance data supports a claim that the original is the only sensible choice.
