About Bond No 9 Bleecker Street

The fragrance these clones are inspired by.

Released in 2005, Bleecker Street by Bond No 9 arrived during a wave of boutique launches that reworked classic green fougères with fruit-forward, modern accents. Created by perfumer David Apel and marketed for women and men, it opens on violet leaf with tart blueberry and cassis cut by thyme, moves to cedar, jasmine and a touch of cinnamon, and dries down to oakmoss, suede, patchouli, amber, vanilla and caramel. The result is a fruity-woody green with clear ozonic and mossy elements. With a 4.19/5 average from 2,329 votes, it is generally well received and often described as a fresh, slightly nostalgic green-berry scent.

Our take

I like how the grassy violet leaf and tart blueberry work together, it smells familiar but a bit modern; performance can be hit-or-miss, often staying closer to the skin but giving decent longevity at times, so I reach for it on spring days when I want something green with a sweet edge.

A Closer Look

The Bottle

Bleecker Street takes the house shape into vivid psychedelic territory. A green border frames a radial burst of purple, lime, white and brown, creating a front that demands attention before the bottle's contours have had time to settle. The purple cap picks up the strongest colour, and the central purple-and-gold Bleecker St. medallion provides a useful focal point. It is busy, bright and proudly extroverted. Anyone wanting a quiet perfume bottle may find it too noisy, but for a dressing table that welcomes colour, this has genuine personality and a clear New York attitude.

Original or Clone

The bottle gives Bleecker Street a presence worth owning, and the credited perfumer, David Apel, adds a clear point of authorship. Its fruity, woody and aromatic profile has drawn attempts from three interpretations made by two houses, evidence that this particular character has standing beyond the bottle itself. We find the original worth buying for readers who care about its distinctive object and named composition; an interpretation remains a reasonable route for others.
