About Bond No 9 Greenwich Village

The fragrance these clones are inspired by.

Greenwich Village is a 2019 release from Bond No. 9 for women and men. It opens on bright litchi, cassis, peach and tangerine, moves into a watery floral heart of water lily, peony and jasmine, and settles on ambroxan, praline, musk, vanilla and oak moss in the drydown. That construction produces a fresh, fruity-floral core with a sweet, musky amber-vanilla finish and a hint of aquatic coolness. The fragrance is well rated at 4.25/5 from 1,662 votes and attracts many fans for its modern, BR540-like character, though a subset of wearers find a synthetic litchi or rubbery drydown off-putting.

Our take

I like the bright fruit and watery florals up front and the creamy ambroxan-vanilla base, but the litchi can read synthetic on my skin and a faint rubbery drydown bothers me; it gets lots of compliments and works best for me as a spring or summer daytime scent, though I’d test it first if you’re sensitive to lychee notes.

A Closer Look

The Bottle

Saturated teal allows the curves of Greenwich Village to do most of the talking. Its narrowed waist opens into a broad, flat base, and that visibly grounded lower section supports the judgement that it’s a heavy bottle. The wide horizontal metal cap matches the teal finish, leaving the circular gold-coloured Greenwich Village NYC medallion as the main contrast. Compared with Bond No. 9’s floral and pop-art designs, this treatment feels refreshingly direct. It’s easy to recognise without becoming chaotic, and the simpler decoration lets both colour and silhouette remain prominent.

Original or Clone

Greenwich Village’s fresh, floral and fruity character has given it a clear place in the conversation: five interpretations from three houses have attempted to reproduce it. That standing matters, because the original sets the reference for a fresh, floral, fruity fragrance with a musky edge. The bottle’s distinctive turquoise-and-gold design also makes the original compelling as an object. We therefore find the original the more persuasive choice, though the available evidence does not establish how closely any interpretation resembles it.
