About Bond No 9 New Haarlem

The fragrance these clones are inspired by.

Released in 2003 during a moment when niche brands pushed richer, gourmand-leaning compositions, Bond No 9's New Haarlem is a unisex fragrance created by Maurice Roucel. It opens on lavender with bright bergamot and green leaves, then settles into a coffee heart backed by cedar; the drydown softens into vanilla, tonka, patchouli and amber. The perfume is dominated by coffee and vanilla accords with warm spicy and woody support, and it earned a strong following early on. It holds a 4.19/5 average from 2,082 votes, with roughly half of voters listing it among their favorites.

Our take

I enjoy New Haarlem for its warm coffee and sweet vanilla that feel cozy without being flat; Roucel balances lavender and cedar so the scent keeps shape as it sweetens. The community scores match my experience: it generally lasts and projects well, so I reach for it on cool evenings. My only reservation is the heavy opening sweetness, I spray light until it settles.

A Closer Look

The Bottle

New Haarlem pushes the house silhouette towards theatrical geometry, with rounded shoulder points, a star-like outline and a wide lower section. Pale yellow liquid keeps the transparent body visually light, while the dark violet horizontal cap supplies the strongest colour. The exposed neck and atomiser are plainly visible, making the spray arrangement part of the appearance rather than hiding it. Cursive lettering and the circular NYC New Haarlem emblem soften the angular shape. It is distinctive without being fussy, although the violet top carries most of the bottle's visual impact.

Original or Clone

Maurice Roucel’s authorship gives New Haarlem its strongest case over the interpretation we track. The coffee, vanilla and warm-spicy accords describe a clear character, but they do not settle how another house’s version wears. With only one house represented, the market offers too little comparative evidence for a stronger claim; on the facts available, the original is the more defensible purchase.
