About Bond No 9 New York Musk

The fragrance these clones are inspired by.

Bond No 9's New York Musk (2012) is a unisex release that puts musk and wood at the center of the house's metropolitan collection. It opens on bright black currant and grapefruit blossom before a heart of green lily, nutmeg and osmanthus adds white floral and warm spicy facets. The base of musk, patchouli, sandalwood and vetiver gives a woody, powdery finish with a clear musky core. Reception is mixed: the fragrance rates 3.68/5 and is polarizing, with about a third of voters loving it while roughly the same share dislike or hate it.

Our take

I enjoy New York Musk for its drydown more than its opening. The first hour has sharp patchouli and fruity-floral top notes that many find bracing or too masculine, but after it dries the musk, sandalwood and vetiver settle into a warm, powdery wood that I like. The community split shows up in my skin tests: longevity is uneven for me, yet the close, woody musk works well for cool daytime wear.

A Closer Look

The Bottle

New York Musk covers a teal sculptural body in dense gold cursive, making the bottle feel almost like a piece of oversized calligraphy. Angled sides and a wide matching oval cap give the outline an eccentric liveliness, while the small NYC medallion anchors the decoration near the lower right. The lettering can become difficult to read, and it is certainly busier than the house's cleaner releases. That excess is also what makes it memorable. New York Musk suits a shelf that welcomes colour and ornament, rather than one built around discreet perfume bottles.

Original or Clone

The bottle gives New York Musk a strong claim to attention. Its woody, musky and powdery character has prompted two houses to attempt interpretations, making this release a recognised reference rather than an obscure target. That activity says nothing about how closely either interpretation resembles it, but it does establish a reason to take the original seriously. For readers deciding between them, the original is the more defensible choice when the bottle and the fragrance’s standing matter.
