Not Vanilla is built from a clear three-tier structure: bright camphor, nutmeg and bergamot open into a heart of vanilla, juniper berries, cedar and violet, while a base of praline, cetalox, musk, guaiac wood, amber and moss grounds the blend. Created by Florian Gallo and Frank Voelkl for BORNTOSTANDOUT® in 2022, the unisex scent reads as a woody, amber-forward composition with musky and powdery facets and a fresh spicy edge from nutmeg and juniper. The contrast between sweet praline/vanilla facets and dry woods gives it a creamy yet resinous character. Reception is mixed, shown by a mid-range 3.52/5 from 142 votes.
Our take
I like the idea and some of the execution: the wood and amber base is warm and the juniper adds a welcome lift, but the vanilla here is more suggestion than full presence for me, which will please some and frustrate others. Longevity can be uneven on my skin; some days it sits close and soft, other times it carries a bit more. I enjoy wearing it on cool days when the sweet and woody parts read richer, though it does flirt with sounding too familiar at times.

The Bottle
Not Vanilla’s bottle is a restrained white column with a surprisingly assertive top: its narrow neck curves outward into a broad, flat-topped white component, giving the silhouette a pronounced flare. Black BTSO lettering and large red NOT VANILLA type break up the blank face effectively. It is clean and somewhat distinctive, though the body itself remains familiar.
Original or Clone
Not Vanilla earns a credible case for the original: three houses have tried to reproduce its woody, amber and musky character, making the release a reference point rather than an obscure curiosity. The credited perfumers, Florian Gallo and Frank Voelkl, add a specific authorship that an interpretation cannot share. That does not make an interpretation an unreasonable choice, but the evidence supports buying this release when its identity and authorship matter more than a general scent brief.
