About Britney Spears Midnight Fantasy

The fragrance these clones are inspired by.

Created by perfumer Caroline Sabas for Britney Spears in 2006, Midnight Fantasy is a women’s fragrance built around sweet fruit and creamy vanilla. Sabas, known for work on mainstream and celebrity releases, opens with plum, sour cherry and raspberry that sit over a floral heart of orchid, iris and freesia and settle into vanilla, musk and amber. The perfume reads very sweet, fruity and powdery, with cherry and vanilla accents prominent. With a 3.96/5 score from nearly 12,000 votes, it is popular with many wearers but also draws a vocal group of detractors, making it a clearly polarizing release.

Our take

I enjoy the fizzy, fruity opening, the plum and sour cherry feel bright and candy-like, and the floral heart adds a soft powder that keeps it playful. Yet the fragrance frustrates me. On my skin it often loses brightness within an hour and turns thin and slightly synthetic, with the vanilla base barely showing. Given the split in votes, I treat this as a close wear, mood-lifting spritz rather than a signature scent; sample first and consider buying only on sale.

A Closer Look

The Bottle

Midnight Fantasy has a large, rounded bottle with a near-spherical body and short cylindrical base. Its deep blue-violet colour appears partly translucent; it is unclear whether that colour belongs to the bottle, liquid or both. Bright round decorations dot the body, while a pale patterned collar and separate domed cap make the arrangement unusually distinctive.

Original or Clone

Midnight Fantasy has a credible case over an interpretation because the bottle is unusually distinctive and the fragrance has a named author: Caroline Sabas. That authorship gives the original a named creative credit an interpretation cannot share, while the bottle makes the release feel like a specific object. For readers who value the object and Sabas’s credit, the original earns the nod.
